Women celebrated at Westmead Hospital

Western Sydney women attended Westmead Hospital on 8 March to celebrate International Women’s Day 2017, as part of an event held in partnership with the Community Migrant Resource Centre and My Westmead.

This year’s theme was Be Bold for Change, focusing on the health needs and issues of women from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Westmead Hospital maternity liaison officer Nelma Galas said the event, now in its third year, celebrated and empowered women of all cultures with various presentations and performances.

“Across Western Sydney Local Health District, 42.7 per cent of our population speak a language other than English, she said.

“We have found that many women who have attended the event, now feel comfortable talking to their GP or health professionals about feelings of isolation, sensitive, or taboo issues, and they are now accessing health services that they were previously unaware of.”
