Auburn Hospital promotes the ‘5 Rights’

Auburn Hospital has introduced a ‘5 Rights’ promotion to improve its rates of medication safety.

Under the 5 Rights principles, the Right drug and the Right dose is given to the Right patient, via the Right route at the Right time.

The promotion follows education by Auburn Hospital pharmacists and clinical nurse educators about medication incidents, which highlighted how problems can be prevented.

It’s the first time the 5 Rights promotion has been done at the hospital.

Wards will create posters to promote the ‘rights’, and these will be used by nurse unit managers and clinical nurse educators to improve awareness of medication safety. Brainstorming sessions based on scenarios where rights have been breached will reinforce daily themes.

Posters will be displayed in the Auburn Hospital foyer, where people can vote for their favourite.
