Realising exceptional medical and dental leaders

The WSLHD Medical Workforce Strategy Steering Committee recently approached the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators to develop a foundation workshop to support the leadership capability of heads of medical and dental departments.

The workshop is part of a new leadership development initiative that WSLHD has launched and reflects the district’s commitment to investing in – and enhancing – clinical leadership, as articulated in the WSLHD Better West strategic priorities.

There was significant interest in the workshop, with 30 senior medical and dental leaders giving up a day to attend.

The workshop explored the role of clinicians as healers, leaders and partners, and merged the clinical experience of doctors with the daily operational, budgetary and relationship challenges they face as managers.

The heads of department were highly engaged and participated in problem-solving exercises, and shared their own leadership challenges and experiences.

Further workshops will be offered, including financial business management sessions.
