End of an era for Alan McMurty

Cumberland Hospital’s clinical nurse manager (workforce, recruitment and staffing) Alan McMurty retired on August 31, after more than 42 years working at Western Sydney Local Health District.

Cumberland Hospital’s Alan McMurtry retired after 42 years of service on August 31.

Alan started working for mental health in 1975, following in the footsteps of his father and uncle – making 97 years of consecutive service for the McMurtry family in western Sydney.

Alan worked at Cumberland Hospital for more than 42 years, growing to be a respected nurse leader.

Cumberland Hospital director of nursing Charles MacMillan said Alan’s commitment to the care of mentally ill patients was of the uppermost quality.

“It was a sad day for all of us to see Alan leave the service and he will be greatly missed by all,” he said.

“Alan really respected his patients – and his respect for his colleagues was equally so.”

Alan McMurty’s family at his retirement: mother Jean McMurty, father Jim McMurty, son Lewis McMurty, Alan’s wife Jennifer McMurty, Alan McMurty, son Thomas McMurty and Debbie McMurty.

Alan’s family joined him for his official farewell on August 31, along with dozens of staff members.
