Antibiotic resistance fighters in action

The WSLHD AMS team: infectious diseases doctors, microbiologists, pharmacists & nurses at the Westmead NAPS audit.

Western Sydney Local Health District’s (WSLHD) infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) team have donned their purple attire to conduct the annual national antimicrobial prescribing survey (NAPS).

The survey is an important tool to ensure WSLHD are using antimicrobials appropriately.

The AMS team carried out a point prevalence survey to assess every single inpatient in the facility and check their antimicrobials were appropriate.

The NAPS helps WSLHD determine prescribing trends, identify targets for quality improvement and evaluate the impact of AMS activities.

Appropriateness of antimicrobials have improved each year since 2013 but it is important to keep monitoring it.

Congratulations to the AMS team – it is a massive undertaking and the team do a wonderful job co-ordinating the activity!
