Supportive group for cancer patients continues to grow

Seven years ago, it began with a vision of consumer representative Greg Long and Professor Peter Zelas to offer a local support group enabling Blacktown Hospital cancer patients and their families an opportunity to feel connected and supported.
Today, more than ever, the Blacktown Hospital Cancer Support Group is offering patients a helping hand as they navigate their way through the many challenges a cancer diagnosis can bring.
To celebrate a successful year, the group recently came together to celebrate the festive season and reflect on 2017.
The support group, which has increased its member numbers in 2017, consists of patients and cancer survivors.
It is supported by local doctors, nurses and social workers. Expert speakers are frequently invited to present on various topics.
Blacktown Hospital social worker Carole Norman said the group ensures patients with cancer have a forum to talk about their diagnosis.
“By talking with others who have had similar experiences, and who understand what you’re going through, members can help each other emotionally,” said Carole.
