Hop to the GP, not the ED

Westmead emergency department
Our emergency departments are for emergencies only.

Need to see a doctor over the long weekend? There will be some local general practitioners (GP) surgeries open during the Easter break.

WSLHD Integrated and Community Health Partnerships director Linda Soars said that scripts, minor injuries or some illnesses are best looked after at a medical centre or GP’s surgery.

“Emergency departments are for emergencies only.  They treat people who are suffering from a serious illness or injury that could get worse or even become fatal if not treated quickly,” Ms Soars said.

For minor injuries or illnesses, visit your GP so that our emergency department staff can focus on patients with urgent or life-threatening conditions.

“The Western Sydney Primary Health Network has prepared a list of GP surgeries and medical centres that will be open from 30 March to 1 April – I encourage local families to keep this handy.

“People can also phone healthdirect Australia (1800 022 222), a free telephone triage and advice line staffed by registered nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year.”
