Westmead Hospital has its very own football stars in its midst, with a team of doctors winning a 5-a-side men’s competition at Lilys Football Centre.

The team is made up of registered medical officers and student medical officers from the hospital.

David Emmerig, who is a registered medical officer said it was the team’s first season.

“We had the intention of forming a team for a while but it was difficult to find an opportunity where we were all available given our work commitments,” David said.

“With the World Cup on the horizon we were inspired to get around to it.”

The team had a difficult start to the competition, losing their first three games and one of their strongest players (Tabish Aleemullah) to injury.

“We were fearlessly led by our captain Peter Emerson who guided us to three wins from the final four games … we won our final game 5-4,” David said.

“Now that Australia is out of the World Cup, maybe Western Sydney Local Health District can throw their support behind our team – we’ll definitely be back next season to defend our title.”

With these results – the team could be ready to take on Germany.

Congratulations to the team and good luck for the next season!
