Book your free health program at your library in September

Librarians educate young children about healthy foods at Parramatta library.

Library enthusiasts across western Sydney are invited to sign up for their personal, free telephone health coach at their local library, as part of a health campaign to get people off the couch.

For the second year running, Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) has partnered with libraries in the Hills Shire Council, Blacktown City Council, City of Parramatta Council and Cumberland Council areas to spread the Make Healthy Normal message to library users.

The month-long program will enable people to sign-up for free health coaching at 25 libraries across western Sydney. Libraries will also be promoting other free health programs including Go4Fun and Stepping On.

During September, some libraries will host a range of free health talks including healthy lunchbox sessions to remind patrons of the importance of healthy eating and active living.

WSLHD Centre for Population Health deputy director Christine Newman said all walks of life visit libraries ranging from young children, teenagers and seniors.

“Libraries are an important community hub and resource to reach the local community – we estimate about 370,000 people to visit libraries throughout September,” Ms Newman said.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with the libraries to help reach members of the community to talk to them about health programs, like the free Get Healthy telephone service where qualified health coaches provide motivation, advice and support over the phone on healthy eating and physical activity to help them achieve sustainable lifestyle changes.

“Small steps can make a big difference and we’re encouraging people to eat more fruit and vegetables and be active every day.

“Visitors who attend selected libraries for the story time and lunchbox sessions will be treated to educational sessions by health professionals.

“Parents attending the lunchbox session will also receive a ‘show bag’ filled with practical health information and be guided on ingredients for a healthy lunchbox.”
