The Westmead Redevelopment project team joined the Operation Art exhibition launch on September 15 and chatted to 300 school children and their families about its arts strategy.

Every year schools across New South Wales are invited to participate in Operation Art, an initiative of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in association with the New South Wales Department of Education.

The Operation Art program provides a forum for schools and students to demonstrate their visual arts achievements through exhibitions at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Following the event 150 works are selected for further exhibition opportunities including 50 selected for a tour series and then given to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

Westmead Redevelopment director of redesign and transformation Carla Edwards said the exhibition launch event at the Amory Gallery was a great opportunity to meet with young people and their families to discuss the project, including the recently launched Arts and Culture Strategy.

“There are many opportunities to get our talented young people involved in arts initiatives at Westmead and to celebrate their artistic skills and vision for Westmead,” Carla said.

“Our strategy outlines a number of spaces that will incorporate art inside and around our new hospital building. Plans include a digital projection gallery and photography competitions which can attract works to be displayed in areas across the new building, including waiting areas.”
