New hospital building puts on its face

Construction of the new hospital building at Westmead has reached an exciting milestone, with the first façade panel being lifted into place at the rear of the construction site.

Westmead Redevelopment project director Tim Mason said this was the first of hundreds of panels that would form the outside of the new building.

“You might have noticed that we recently removed sections of scaffolding and fencing, which we had up during the concrete pouring process, at the part of the site facing Redbank Road and Dragonfly Drive,” Tim said.

“Once this section was removed, we started to lift the first of the façade panels into place. With a few more panels in place, we will start to see the artist’s impressions of the building come to life.”

Construction of services inside the building have already started on levels one and two, including plumbing and electrical work.

As each section of the façade is complete, windows are installed and the space is then deemed weather-tight.

Work then starts on interior walls and ceilings.

The lift core has progressed to level 10 and work is occurring on floors four to seven of the new hospital building and Innovation Centre.
