Caring for his parents in their final years motivated consumer Mike Font to get involved with the design of the new hospital building at Westmead.

Mike is one of many carers being celebrated by the Westmead Redevelopment project team during National Carers Week, which runs from 14 – 20 October 2018.

“I cared for my parents until the end of their lives – a very sad time, watching their health deteriorate, something that I’ll never forget,” Mike said.

“Unfortunately, I’ve spent lots of time in waiting areas and patient rooms of hospitals. It’s good that I’ve been able to use this knowledge in a positive way and I hope to improve the experiences for other carers, patients and families.”

Mike and his fellow consumers have participated in hundreds of meetings and workshops to design spaces inside the new hospital building and refurbished areas inside Westmead Hospital. They have also been involved in reviews of a number of services and procedures, including medication management for older patients and policies for overnight stays and visiting hours.

Consumers’ personal experiences have ensured patient-centred design has occurred at all stages of the Westmead Redevelopment project planning process.

“National Carers Week is an opportunity to say a huge thank you to our consumers,” said Westmead Redevelopment project director Carla Edwards.

“Their personal experiences and insights, as carers and patients, have shaped the design of the entrance to the new hospital building, patient rooms including carer zones, waiting areas, patient lounges on each floor, a parent’s retreat, our arts and culture strategy, and the cultural gathering place.”
