COVID-19 ward nurse speaks on latest podcast episode

Westmead Hospital COVID-19 ward nurse Ashleigh Peters.

Caring for patients with a highly-infectious and isolating disease has been an expected challenge for registered nurse Ashleigh Peters.

Ashleigh joined Westmead Hospital through the GradStart program last year and spent six months in the busy emergency department before transferring to a surgical ward.

When that ward was temporarily shut down as elective surgeries were cancelled for COVID-19, Ashleigh found herself learning new skills to be on the frontline of the epidemic.

On the latest episode of our podcast Western Sydney Health Check, Ashleigh shares how she’s adapted to the challenges this year with the support of her tight-knit colleagues.

She also speaks about what it’s like caring for patients who are scared of the new disease and can’t have visitors for fear of spreading the infection.

Joining her on the podcast is Yervette Jones, nursing workforce manager for Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD), who explains the WSLHD GradStart program for registered nurses and midwives.
