Seven new COVID-19 cases in NSW

There have been seven new cases of COVID-19 diagnosed in NSW in the 24 hours to 8pm last night. Three previous cases have been excluded following further analysis, meaning the total number of cases now stands at 3,244. A further two probable cases have been identified in Albury and are undergoing further testing.

Six of today’s new cases are returned travellers in hotel quarantine. The seventh case is a recently returned traveller who tested negative on day 10 of quarantine, but developed symptoms on his return home to Newcastle on Sunday, after being released from hotel quarantine. He and his close contacts are in isolation.

The two probable cases in Albury are not included in today’s new cases and are not included in Victoria’s totals.

A total of 9,746 tests were notified in the reporting period, compared with 11,555 tests in the previous 24 hours. NSW has now carried out more than 963,000 COVID-19 tests.

There are 67 COVID-19 cases being treated by NSW Health, with one in intensive care. This person does not require a ventilator. In NSW, 2,798 people are known to have recovered from COVID-19.

Anyone feeling unwell – even with the mildest of symptoms such as a runny nose or scratchy throat – is urged to self-isolate and seek testing. It is essential people follow directions they receive about home isolation and quarantine and maintain COVID-safe practices of physical distancing of 1.5 metres, cough or sneeze into their elbow, and regularly wash their hands.

As of 12.01am today, the NSW HotSpot Order was extended to residents from Greater Melbourne.

This means they can only enter NSW for very limited reasons, such as obtaining medical care, or fulfilling a legal obligation.

The border between NSW and Victoria will be closed from 12.01am Wednesday, 8 July.

The requirement for NSW residents returning from Melbourne hotspots to self-isolate for 14 days will then be extended to anyone returning from Victoria. Heavy penalties and fines apply.

Provisions will be in place for residents of border regions, such as Albury-Wodonga.
