Westmead partners proud of project prize for health

The 14-level centrepiece of the Westmead Health Precinct stands as a beacon of health’s future. From this week, it can add “award-winning” to its lofty description.

The Central Acute Services Building (CASB) was honoured with its first major award when announced as 2020 Health Project of the Year at the annual Boomtown! Property & Infrastructure Summit at the International Convention Centre, Darling Harbour.

Event organiser Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue selected the CASB as the standout across social, economic, environmental and architectural aspects of the selection criteria.

Acting director Redevelopment and Infrastructure Matt Sydenham accepted the award along with Tim Hoffmann, director Planning and Redesign at ‎Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network; Rebecca Wark, chief executive, Health Infrastructure; and Greg Robinson, chief university infrastructure officer at the University of Sydney.

Matt said the award represented a true reflection of the hard work, expertise and commitment to deliver the Central Acute Services Building by its proud partners – the Western Sydney Local Health District, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, the University of Sydney and Health Infrastructure.

“This award is years in the making and a true testament to our partnership on the Westmead Health Precinct,” Matt said.

“Collaboration has been key to this project from the outset – right from initial planning, community consultation, construction through to commissioning.

“We now look forward to this state-of-the-art building opening in early 2021 to serve the people of western Sydney.”

The centrepiece of the more than $1 billion Westmead Redevelopment, the CASB will feature:

• Two new emergency departments — one for adults and one for children

• Digital operating theatres

• Expanded imaging, pharmacy and logistics

• More than 300 patient rooms

• 1.5 floors for the University of Sydney to enable greater integration of education, research and health services delivery.

The CASB opens early 2021.
