From combating dehydration to safe sex: WSLHD expert’s advice for young people this party season

Ahead of New Year’s Eve and the approaching festival season, The Pulse spoke with Western Sydney Local Health District’s (WSLHD) Youth Health team for some advice about staying safe while having fun.

Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nina Livingstone, had the below tips to share:

What advice do you have for young people heading to music festivals over the summer?

Remember some safe partying tips like:

  • drink plenty of water
  • take a phone charger
  • have a plan for getting home
  • no glove no love (safe sex is the best sex)
  • be sun safe

What should young people look out for at festivals?

When you arrive, take note of where the emergency services are located. Get your bearings and find a nice shady spot to cool down.

There are also free water stations – these are great especially during hot weather.

Finally, I recommend always having a meeting spot for you and your friends. Phone reception can be tricky, so make sure you talk about plans to meet up if you get separated.

What advice do you have for staying safe while at NYE celebrations?

Remember not to drink and drive.

Be smart and be road safe.

Don’t leave your drink unattended.

Be aware of public transport options and limitations, and always make sure your friends and family know where you are going.
