Professor Clara Chow nominated for NSW Woman of Excellence award

Professor Clara Chow is a prominent figure in Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD).

Aside from working as an esteemed member of the Westmead Hospital team, she is an innovator in cardiological health research, the recipient of a Member of the Order of Australia in 2023 and now a nominee for the NSW Woman of Excellent awards, recognising her outstanding contributions to healthcare and research.

As a Cardiologist and Clinical Lead for community-based cardiac services, alongside her role as the Academic Director at the Westmead Applied Research Centre, Clara’s nomination serves as an acknowledgement of her dedication, innovation, and leadership in her field.

In a recent interview with The Pulse, Clara spoke about her professional journey, motivations, and the impact of her work.

“It’s a privilege to be a clinician and it’s the patients that continue to inspire my work,” Clara said.

Science and research are about identifying problems and solving them. It takes many people with diverse talents and working together to address them.

“I have found it hugely satisfying but my advice to anyone starting out is to expect to be frustrated and have your ups and downs!”

Reflecting on her proudest achievements, Clara spoke passionately about her pioneering work in applied digital health, particularly in preventing cardiovascular diseases.

I am proud of the people I have helped develop and train, and our wins in bringing greater diversity to our cardiology workforce as well as our scientific workforce.

Currently, Clara is involved in a number of groundbreaking projects, including the utilisation of consumer technologies and artificial intelligence to revolutionise heart disease management and prevention.

Additionally, her team is exploring the potential of conversational AI in patient follow-up and monitoring, to create new ways of facilitating patient care.

Speaking about her award nomination, Clara expressed profound appreciation for the recognition, underscoring the significance of such acknowledgment within her profession.

When asked why she enjoys working at Westmead Hospital, she said it all comes down to the brilliant team around her.

“It’s the colleagues, the collegiality — that is, it’s the people!”
