From awareness to action: WSLHD launches the Vaping Cessation Workshop to provide support for students in western Sydney

The Prevention Education and Research Unit (PERU) of Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) has come together in collaboration with the Health Promotion Service of Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) to host the first ever Vaping Cessation Workshop (VSW), marking a pivotal moment in addressing the surge of adolescent e-cigarette use.

Since 2020 there has been an exponential rise in adolescent e-cigarette use which has emerged as a pressing concern for both health and education sectors.

In response to this, PERU engaged in extensive consultation with school communities and key stakeholders to set up this crucial initiative.

The workshop offered cessation support for students, requisite education, training and resources and was attended by a diverse range of Wellbeing Staff from schools across greater western Sydney.

A sense of collaboration and enthusiasm was felt throughout the VCW as teachers, student support officers, school counsellors and community liaison officers along with 21 high schools actively engaged in discussion.

Starting the conversation comes from getting to know the students, understanding the trends of it in our school and being active about helping. Showing short videos in classes and having a discussion.

Participants lauded the event for its informative, interactive, and engaging nature and acknowledged vaping as a prevalent issue within their school communities.

As part of usual mental health conversations, I will ask about ways of coping and open the door to discuss vape use.

The workshop not only empowered Wellbeing Staff with knowledge, skills, and tools to effectively address adolescent vaping but also fostered peer connections and emphasised the significance of establishing referral pathways with healthcare professionals.

The Vaping Cessation Workshop is an incredible achievement and initiative, signifying western Sydney’s proactive stance in safeguarding the wellbeing of its youth while underscoring the vital role of collaborative efforts in combating emerging public health challenges.
